A Game of Thrones (One Chair)

Anyone with their finger on the pulse of the cultural zeitgeist of this day in age either watches or knows someone who watches the Game of Thrones television series. The TV show is an adaptation of George RR. Martin’s book series called A Song Of Ice and Fire. Initially published in 1996, the first book’s title became the namesake of the show that everyone recognizes. Who would have known that 23 years ago, a cultural phenomenon would be given life?

Lots of Fighting for the Throne

For anyone who hasn’t read the books or seen the television series, the story is set on two continents. One is called Westeros and the other is Essos. Each place has its own countries, regions, and rulers and they all seem to have their eyes set on some kind of prize. At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to the House of Stark. Initially, the Starks are a family whose line has defended the northern border of Westeros from threats for generations.

Let’s just say that the author of the books likes to shake things up so you shouldn’t get too attached to any characters too quickly. The head of the Starks, Eddard (aka Ned) Stark goes to help his lifelong friend, Robert Baratheon, the King of Westeros down in the south at the capital, King’s Landing. Soon after, however, good old honorable Ned makes a fateful discovery that launches the whole realm of Westeros and some parts of Essos into a giant fight for the Iron Throne.

It would take a book in and of itself to explain all the intrigue, deception, and infighting that goes on just in the first season of the show, so I will spare you all the details and. Having read the books and watched the show, I would recommend the books first, if you haven’t seen the show. Sadly, however, the show outpaced the books by the 5th season. So you have to switch to the show to continue the story. One fair warning, the show has some major characters and plot points that are missing from the book so you end up having to watch the show from the beginning.

The Iron Throne

Uncomfortable Chair…

Interestingly, the Iron Throne is a relic from a past war where a king from Essos crossed the sea and conquered Westeros. Crafted from the swords of defeated enemies, the throne is rumored to cut anyone that’s unworthy of sitting upon it. When I first read about that, I thought it was one of the coolest things. Now, though, my opinion has changed slightly.

Honestly, the story’s interesting and expertly crafted, but it really is just lots of people fighting over a chair. It’s like the largest most brutal game of musical chairs you’ve ever witnessed. Now, I know I am being tongue-in-cheek here, but it’s true to a certain degree. In my house, there’s a game of thrones that happens every night we rent a movie from the Red Box…
